I definitely didn’t explain this very well up in front of the class. What I was trying to say is that we don’t just prioritize beauty, but the concept itself. The concept of beauty has become linked to being a good person or a person of value to the point where people feel the need to proclaim beauty in the old, almost as a way to comfort themselves. You aren’t meant to look beautiful when you’re really old you know. You’ll probably have wrinkles and that’s kind of just tough shit to be honest. I really started thinking about this last year when reading “The Beauty Myth” by Naomi Wolf. This really stuck out to me though when I was watching Barbie. There is a scene where Barbie sees an older version of herself and cries. Many people saw this as Barbie recognizing the beauty in her old age. At the end of the day, an old lady sitting next to Margot Robbie ain’t making it far in the beauty competition and why would we he expect her to or act like she does. I see this a lot online and in real life in something as seemingly harmless like a skin-care routine. On its own, you’re just keeping your skin clean and healthy but there are many people obsessed with the concept as a way of remaining young for as long as possible. Why is that? Because to be young is to be beautiful. To be beautiful is to have value.
